Discovering the Beauty and Tranquility of Kingwood Center Gardens in Mansfield, Ohio

Tucked away in the charming city of Mansfield, Ohio, lies a horticultural haven that promises a serene escape from the everyday hustle and bustle—the Kingwood Center Gardens. This 47-acre estate, originally the private residence of industrialist Charles Kelley King, has been transformed into a public garden that offers visitors a breathtaking blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and artistic inspiration.  We visited on a scouting trip for our upcoming video series in support of our new book Everyday Herbal.  This may be a location where we shoot an episode or segment for our series, it sure inspired me to make some changes to our herb garden at home and at Verdigris!

A Glimpse into History

Kingwood Center Gardens is more than just a collection of beautiful plants; it’s a window into the past. Charles Kelley King, a prominent figure in Mansfield’s industrial history, built the French Provincial-style mansion in 1926. Upon his death in 1952, King bequeathed the estate to the public, ensuring that future generations could enjoy the splendor he had created. Today, the gardens and the mansion stand as a testament to his vision and generosity.

Exploring the Gardens

As you step through the gates of Kingwood Center Gardens, you are greeted by an enchanting landscape that changes with the seasons. The gardens are meticulously designed, featuring a variety of themed areas that each offer their own unique charm:

The Terrace Gardens: These gardens are a symphony of color and design, with vibrant seasonal flowers arranged in intricate patterns. The terraces provide a stunning backdrop for photographs and a peaceful spot to enjoy the beauty of nature.

The Rose Garden: A must-see for any rose enthusiast, this garden boasts a wide variety of rose species, each more beautiful than the last. The sweet fragrance and delicate petals create a romantic and serene atmosphere.

The Woodland Garden: For those who prefer a more natural setting, the Woodland Garden offers a tranquil retreat with shaded pathways, native plants, and the soothing sounds of a nearby stream.

The Herb Garden: This garden not only delights the senses with its aromatic herbs but also educates visitors about the culinary and medicinal uses of various plants. It’s a wonderful place to learn and explore. This was my initial reason for visiting.  I love herb gardens and how each home uses herbs, flowers and plants for cooking and health care and Kingwood didn’t disappoint!

The Greenhouse: The greenhouse at Kingwood Center is a treasure trove of tropical plants and exotic flowers. It’s a perfect escape on a chilly day, offering a warm and humid environment filled with lush greenery.

The Mansion and Museum

The Kingwood Hall mansion is a highlight of any visit. This beautifully preserved home offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the early 20th century. The mansion is filled with period furnishings, art, and personal items that tell the story of Charles Kelley King and his legacy. Guided tours provide fascinating insights into the history of the estate and its founder.
